What a Wine Tasting Taught Me About Building an Iconic Brand

The other night, I had the pleasure of attending a Caymus wine tasting at Akira Back in Delray Beach, FL. As I sipped through the different wines and listened to the stories behind Caymus and the Wagner family legacy, I realized something: this wasn’t just a tasting. It was a brand masterclass.

We even had the incredible opportunity to meet Chef Akira Back himself, who had flown in from Las Vegas for this special evening. It was such a treat to chat with him before the tasting (and I even discovered he’s a heavy metal fan!). One of his signature dishes, the Eryngii Mushroom, was served that night—and it was absolutely out of this world. The general manager, Matt, was welcoming, kind, and engaging as always, and at the bar a charismatic young bartender—who looked strikingly like a young Bruno Mars—crafted a cocktail called The Summer of Love that set the tone for the night. During the tasting, Wagner Family of Wines Market Manager, Abbie Jo, captivated us with unique and fun stories about the wine, the family, and the Caymus history. Overall, the entire experience felt deeply personal, which made it all the more special.

Whether you’re building a personal brand or growing a business, here are the brand lessons Caymus delivered—glass by glass:

1. Lead with Legacy—but Make It Fresh

Caymus is rooted in tradition. The Wagner family has been cultivating Napa Valley grapes for generations, and yet here I was, sipping their wine in a sleek, modern Japanese restaurant in South Florida.

Insight:
Honor your roots, but don’t be afraid to show up in new places. Just like Caymus at Akira Back, the strongest brands evolve and show up where their audience is today—not just where they’ve always been.

2. Become Synonymous With One Thing

Caymus is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon. Not just any Cab—their Cab. Rich, bold, silky, and instantly recognizable. It’s their signature.

Insight:
You don’t need to be everything to everyone. Focus on what you do best. Own it. Let that be your calling card.

3. Make Every Experience Elevated

From the moment we sat down, everything felt intentional. The wine presentation. The stories shared. The pairing of each pour with chef-driven bites. It wasn’t just a wine—it was an experience.

Insight:
How do people feel after interacting with your brand? Every touchpoint matters. Whether it’s your website, a discovery call, or an in-person event—make it meaningful and memorable.

4. Be Bold, Even If It’s Not for Everyone

Caymus doesn’t try to please every palate. Their wines are bold, fruit-forward, and unapologetically luxurious. Some critics love it. Others question it. But Caymus remains confidently Caymus.

Insight:
You won’t resonate with everyone—and that’s okay. Great brands are clear, confident, and consistent. Don’t dilute your voice to stay safe. Be proud of what makes you distinct.

5. Create Connection, Not Just Commerce

What stood out most during the tasting was the way the story was told. This wasn’t about selling bottles—it was about sharing history, family, passion, and craftsmanship.

Insight:
People don’t buy products or services—they buy feelings. They invest in stories. When your brand communicates values, not just value, it becomes unforgettable.

6. Scale Without Losing Soul

The Caymus name has expanded, yet it still carries the family essence.

Insight:
Growth is good—but growth without grounding can erode trust. As you scale your brand or business, ask: Does this still feel like me? If yes—keep going. If not—refine.

Final Thought

As I left Akira Back that evening, I kept thinking how effortless the experience felt—like you were being welcomed into their family for the evening. And maybe that’s the secret.

Iconic brands aren’t just built on strategy. They’re built on intention, consistency, and connection.

Whether you’re leading a company, a coaching practice, or a creative project—show up boldly, share your story, and never underestimate the power of how you make people feel.
