Last night, I had the privilege of attending Superyacht Industry Night at House on the River in Fort Lauderdale, hosted by the ever-dynamic Kitty McGowan of NautiCom Communications.

The Yachting Capital of the World
Fort Lauderdale is often called the “Yachting Capital of the World”, and for good reason. South Florida alone welcomes over 1,500 superyachts each year, fueling billions in marine commerce, tourism, and high-end design. The industry itself is expanding rapidly, with the global superyacht market projected to reach $16.4 billion by 2030.
The evening highlighted not only the luxury and innovation within this sector but also the collaboration it takes to keep it thriving. I had the opportunity to connect with:
- Finn Wollesen Petersen, Managing Director of Knud E. Hansen, one of the most respected ship design firms in the world. With a legacy of more than 80 years and over 900 vessel designs delivered, Knud E. Hansen continues to shape not just yachts but the future of maritime architecture. Finn’s insights, along with the presence of his daughter, spoke to the industry’s mix of tradition and forward-looking innovation.
- January Howard, of Aroma360, who shared how luxury scenting is becoming an essential layer of the yachting experience. From bespoke fragrances that capture the essence of ocean breezes to signature scents that reflect an owner’s personality, scenting transforms yachts into immersive environments. In an industry where every detail matters, January’s work ensures that guests don’t just see and feel luxury—they breathe it in.
- Johnnie Cope, of Shield Remediation & Cope Design & Build, who swoops in like a superhero when mold takes hold. For yacht owners, mold and water damage aren’t just inconvenient—they’re a threat to safety, comfort, and the longevity of these vessels. Johnnie’s expertise ensures that when problems strike, remediation happens quickly and thoroughly, protecting investments that can easily run into the tens or hundreds of millions. His work may often happen behind the scenes, but it’s absolutely vital to keeping yachts seaworthy and their owners worry-free.
- Matthew DeRose, Account Manager for BOAT International, who reminded me that advertising isn’t just marketing—it’s the industry’s lifeline of communication. With yacht owners and decision-makers spread across the globe, publications like BOAT International bridge the gap between shipyards, designers, brokers, and clients. Matt’s work ensures the stories of innovation, craftsmanship, and sustainability reach the right audience at the right time—fueling both inspiration and sales.
- Dave Carlile, of Blues Breaker Service, a Marine services company that specializes in Custom Woodworking and Yacht Quality Control Reviews. He also provides assistance in anything needed to maintain your vessel.
- And of course, Kitty McGowan, who not only brought together leaders in yachting but also recognized the outstanding House on the River team for creating a setting where true connections could flourish.
What struck me most is that the superyacht industry—while glamorous on the surface—is fundamentally about people and partnerships. From naval architects to media leaders, from suppliers to service providers, it’s an ecosystem that thrives when collaboration is at its core.
The Future of Superyachting
And the momentum doesn’t stop here. Next month, the industry will gather again at the Monaco Yacht Show, one of the most prestigious events in yachting. Over 600 exhibitors and 120 superyachts are expected to showcase the latest in design, innovation, and sustainability. It’s a reminder that while Fort Lauderdale anchors the industry here in the U.S., Monaco continues to set the stage globally for where yachting is headed.
Events like these—whether in Fort Lauderdale or Monaco—are proof that growth isn’t just about bigger yachts or advanced technology. It’s about relationships that spark innovation, sustainability, and shared success.
I left inspired—not just by the beauty of the industry, but by the resilience and creativity of the people shaping its future.
