Stepping Outside the Comfort Zone: Lessons from a SoFloTech Meetup

Networking is one of those words that can bring up mixed emotions. Some people thrive in a room full of new faces, while others sometimes feel a little out of their element. Recently, I attended the SoFloTechFriends Meetup at Throw Social in Delray, and I was reminded that stepping into uncomfortable spaces can spark real growth.

A Stormy Florida Evening

It was hot and muggy, with a thunderstorm rolling through as I left my house. My dog was trembling and on edge, so I tucked her safely in the bedroom with the closet open in case the thunder got too loud. It felt awful to leave her, and by the time I arrived at the venue, I was already carrying that restless, unsettled energy. And then came the other challenge: walking into a room of strangers.

The Truth About Networking

Here’s something I don’t often admit: networking has never felt completely natural to me. People assume I’m confident and outgoing, but the reality is, I still get butterflies and feel anxious on occasion.

Here’s a little secret I’ll let you in on, years ago, I used to hang out in the bathroom during events—waiting until the program officially started so I didn’t have to face the awkwardness of standing in a ballroom full of strangers I didn’t know. Fortunately, over time and through practice I’ve learned that I can fight through it and remember the real value of attending.

Because the truth is, nervousness doesn’t have to be a weakness. In fact, it can be a strength—because it makes me slow down, pay attention, and listen Instead of going in with an agenda, I simply go to genuinely meet people and learn about them.

I practice curiosity:

  • Asking thoughtful questions
  • Listening more than I talk
  • Focusing on the person in front of me

This shift changes the whole dynamic. Instead of forcing conversations, I’m creating connections.

Refining My Elevator Pitch

Another benefit of networking? It gives us the chance to refine our elevator pitch. As a business owner, I constantly work on how I explain what I do in a way that’s simple, clear, and valuable. Every new introduction is a test run, and every reaction teaches me something.

This is the same process I guide my clients through—helping them find clarity in their messaging so they can resonate with the right people and attract the right opportunities.

Why Stepping Out Matters

Walking into that meetup, sweaty and nervous, reminded me of something important: growth rarely happens inside the comfort zone. And just when I was on my way out, I spotted a familiar face. I left grateful that I didn’t let discomfort keep me home. I met some really cool people and learned about their journeys in tech which I really enjoyed.

Final Thought

Networking doesn’t have to be about being the loudest voice in the room. Sometimes, it’s about being the best listener. And sometimes, it’s about proving to yourself that you can push through the nerves and walk away with something valuable.

How do you handle networking when you’re outside your comfort zone? Do you lean into listening, or do you perfect your pitch?
