The Quiet Proof We Forget to Look For

I was cleaning out a bin of items from my second bedroom—one I never quite finished unpacking when I moved last year. I’d tried before and stopped. This time, I stayed with it. What I found surprised me. So many important pieces of my life were sitting quietly…in a bin.

There was a photo of my first dog, Sammy. Pictures of me with my perfectly named bunnies—Mo, Jo, and Flo. A ring with a blue stone I once imagined wearing when I got married. And beneath it all, folded and worn, a note I didn’t know how much I needed until I read it.

We all go through seasons where our confidence fades. Where we feel a little lost, a little unsure of our direction or our value. Reading that note brought something back. It said:

“Thank you for all you taught me, but more importantly, thank you for instilling the confidence in me to believe I can follow my dreams!”

I felt validated—not because it praised my work, but because it reminded me that my work mattered. That something I did had made a real difference in someone else’s life. And I think we forget how important those reminders are.

Impact Isn’t Always Loud

We tend to measure impact by visibility. Numbers. Recognition. Big wins. But sometimes the most meaningful proof of who we are and what we do is quiet.

Sometimes it’s a letter tucked away. Sometimes it’s a photo. Sometimes it’s a memory you haven’t looked at in years. Sometimes you have to clean out a bin to extract those gifts. And sometimes they show up not for sharing—but to remind you who you are when doubt creeps in.

If you’re feeling uncertain right now, I want to offer this:
Your impact may already exist—you just might not be looking in the right place. Look within.

Take a moment. Reflect. Look for the quiet proof. It’s often closer than you think. It’s not outside you. It’s in “your bin.”

Some items to reflect upon:

  • What “bins” in your life—literal or emotional—have you avoided revisiting?
  • Is there a moment, message, or memory that could remind you of your impact?
  • Who were you before self-doubt started speaking louder than truth?
